The Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), has partnered with the cooperative sector to enhance access to affordable medicines in rural areas. This collaboration involves establishing Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) through Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS). As of November 30, 2024, over 2,690 PACS have received initial approval, and 687 Kendras are operational.
The initiative aims to provide quality generic medicines at affordable prices, reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenditures for rural populations. By leveraging the extensive network of PACS, the program ensures wider reach and accessibility. The government’s commitment to expanding the PMBJP network is evident, with a target to increase the number of Kendras to 10,500 by March 2025.
This strategic partnership underscores the government’s dedication to improving healthcare access and affordability, particularly in underserved rural regions. By integrating cooperative societies into the PMBJP framework, the initiative not only broadens the distribution network but also strengthens community engagement in public health initiatives.
