India’s BPCL Plans New Refining, Petchem Projects in the Next 5-7 Years

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is embarking on a significant expansion of its refining and petrochemical operations over the next five to seven years to meet India’s escalating energy demands. The company plans to increase its refining capacity from the current 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 900,000 bpd by 2028. This expansion includes enhancing the Kochi refinery’s capacity from 310,000 bpd to 450,000 bpd and the Bina refinery’s capacity from 156,000 bpd to 300,000 bpd by 2026.

In addition to refining, BPCL is investing in petrochemical projects at both the Kochi and Bina refineries, aiming to commission these facilities by 2027 and 2028, respectively. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to diversify BPCL’s product offerings and capitalize on the growing demand for petrochemical products in India.

Beyond these projects, BPCL is exploring the establishment of a new 180,000 to 300,000 bpd refinery in either Andhra Pradesh or Uttar Pradesh. This potential facility would further augment BPCL’s refining capacity and strengthen its presence in key regions.

To support these expansions, BPCL plans to add 4,000 new fuel retail outlets across India within the next five years, increasing its total to 26,000. The company is also committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, with plans to invest ₹1 trillion in renewable energy, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, and carbon capture technologies.

These strategic initiatives underscore BPCL’s commitment to enhancing India’s refining and petrochemical infrastructure, aligning with the nation’s growing energy needs and sustainability goals.
