Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is embarking on a significant refining capacity expansion as part of its strategic efforts to meet India’s growing energy demands. BPCL plans to increase its total refining capacity from the current 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 900,000 bpd by 2028. This ambitious project involves the enhancement of key facilities, including the Kochi and Bina refineries, to boost production efficiency and diversify product offerings.
Kochi Refinery Expansion: The capacity of the Kochi refinery, BPCL’s largest facility, will be increased from 310,000 bpd to 450,000 bpd. The upgraded facility will not only focus on refining but also integrate advanced petrochemical production capabilities.
Bina Refinery Expansion: The Bina refinery, currently producing 156,000 bpd, is set to expand to 300,000 bpd by 2026. This project aims to cater to the growing demand for refined products and petrochemicals in central and northern India.
BPCL is also exploring the establishment of a new refinery with a capacity between 180,000 bpd and 300,000 bpd in either Andhra Pradesh or Uttar Pradesh. This potential project reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing its refining network across the country.
In addition to these expansions, BPCL is investing heavily in petrochemical projects. The company plans to build advanced petrochemical units at both the Kochi and Bina refineries, aiming to commence operations between 2027 and 2028. These facilities will produce high-value chemicals that are essential for industries such as plastics, textiles, and automotive.
BPCL’s investments also extend to sustainability, with a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company is allocating ₹1 trillion towards renewable energy, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, and carbon capture technologies.
These projects align with BPCL’s broader vision to strengthen India’s energy and petrochemical infrastructure, reduce dependency on imports, and support the country’s economic growth. By expanding its refining and petrochemical capacities, BPCL is positioning itself as a key player in India’s energy and industrial landscape for the future.
