Pfizer Launches Global Drug Development Center in Chennai

Pfizer has established its first global drug development center in Asia at the IIT Madras Research Park in Chennai, India. This 61,000-square-foot facility, representing an investment of approximately $20 million (₹150 crore), is part of Pfizer’s network of 12 global development centers and is the only one currently located in Asia.

The center focuses on the development of both active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished dosage forms (FDFs) for various products, including complex formulations, controlled-release dosage forms, and device-combination products. It employs over 250 scientists and professionals across multiple disciplines, such as formulation science, analytical research, microbiology, biotechnology, chemical engineering, and data science.

Strategically situated within the IIT Madras Research Park, the facility benefits from proximity to premier academic institutions and innovative start-ups, fostering collaboration between industry and academia. This initiative underscores Pfizer’s commitment to leveraging India’s scientific talent and infrastructure to advance global drug development.

The establishment of this center aligns with Pfizer’s strategy to introduce 25 new therapies by 2025, with a special focus on oncology and hospital products. By consolidating critical research and development capabilities under one roof, Pfizer aims to accelerate the development of innovative therapies for patients worldwide.
